Spring is here!

Hurray! Spring! We have been busy little bees that last few months. A week or so ago we got 150 new laying chickens - a heritage breed called Golden Comets.  They are, especially when compared to our older ladies, truly spring chickens. There antics are still amusing us, and their lovely fertilizer is continually being deposit on our cover crops. Eggs for all of us, fertility for the farm. They will begin laying in about 4 weeks - just in time for the start of the summer CSA
Our crew has assembled and have been working hard - these past few days we've been planting onions - a large job as we decided to grow a lot more of them this year. We have also planted a 1400 foot forsythia and lilac hedgerow along our North border. That's a lot of plants! There are now little flowers on all of the plants - a tiny peep of the glory to come as the hedge gets bigger.  We also planted the beginnings of a tree fruit orchard - gold rush and liberty apples so far.  We've put about 50 trees in this spring and hope to complete the orchard  with some Asian pears next Spring.
Saul is dong great - he and I have been doing as much farming together as we can - which is quite a bit. He loves being outside on my back. That makes for a happy mom! here is a picture of us heading out to survey the farm one evening in early April.
