Digging big holes and planting strawberries

Greetings from Sweet Land. All's well and moving along here at the farm. It's planting season and we are being extremely seasonal. Today my sister Leah, our intern Aimee, Yheva and myself will plant strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries. The plants are out soaking in tubs of barrel compost in preparation for planting. Hurray! Tomorrow is slated for planting tomatoes. (Lots of them).
Many things are poking out of the soil and taking off - carrots, beets, spinach, salad mix, parsnips, radishes, leeks, broccoli, just a partial list.
We put up a deer fence last week and it works so far! I like the sense of structure that it lends to the fields.
Yesterday we had an excavator come out with a backhoe and dig several deep holes to asses a good pond site. It was exciting to see such deep narrow holes. They gave us a rare chance to really see the make up of our soil profile. We have decided on a pond site and the excavator will start building next week. We are looking forward to having the beauty as well as utility of a pond on the farm.
We have just completed improvements on the farm road and have put in a gravel parking lot for our CSA members. I sort of felt like we were paving paradise, but the parking lot looks good, too.
Take care and happy spring!
